In January I will be leaving to serve in Uganda for 12 months with International Justice Mission working with a team of social workers helping victims of violence and abuse. IJM is an incredible organization that works to protect the poor and vulnerable from violence. Their model for doing this is effective because it is holistic and sustainable - equipping local people with the resources that they need and empowering them to live with the dignity that is inherent within them. They rescue victims, bring the criminal perpetrators to justice, strengthen local police and justice systems, and provide care for survivors. In Uganda, I will be working with the Aftercare Department in the Kampala office helping those who have been freed from situations of violence and abuse transition back into everyday life, giving them access to counseling and a safe place to work. This is an amazing opportunity for me to participate in work that I am passionate about with an organization that I know is working hard and effectively to bring an end to slavery and violence against the poor.

While this is an amazing opportunity, there are some significant financial responsibilities that go along with it. As it is a volunteer position, I am responsible for all of my own expenses while I am abroad. This includes flights, a week-long orientation in D.C., visas, and immunization costs. In addition to this, I am responsible for all of my living expenses in-country, such as rent, food, utilities, transportation, and health and wellness costs. With all of these costs in mind, the estimated cost of the trip is $12,750-$18,550. Anything that you would be able to give would be helpful!
