Kassie*, has not had an easy life. Raised by an alcoholic father, she went through so much as she grew up. But things got worse when her father, the main income earner and in charge of the finances, passed suddenly two years ago when she was just 15. When Kassie's mother, who was barely present before checked out mentally and emotionally, it was left to Kassie to keep her household together. Facing constant eviction, power and water disconnects, and food shortages, this girl kept it all together. 

Last week, she messaged me to say her car had broken down leaving her stranded in the middle of town. A friend had been able to order a Lyft for her to school but she had no idea how to get home and no idea what to do about her car. She knew she couldn't afford the repairs or a new car. It is the only car in her household (and she is the only one who can drive) and she uses it for everything, including and especially errands and groceries, not to mention getting to and from high school.
