Description:

ROHA (Ray of Hope Academy) is a non-profit ministry within Douala, Cameroon Africa and is the first and only affordable school in Cameroon that enrolls children on the spectrum. It began when the founder, Ernest Ehabe, realized his son, AJ,  was regressing. When he took AJ to the United States, specialists diagnosed him with autism and recommended that he go to speech and ABA therapy. After returning to Cameroon, Ernest discovered that these services were not available in Cameroon and struggled to find a school. Eventually, Ernest found a school with limited services, but the price was costly. After a while, he found his finances completely drained. Taking a step of faith he painted a room in his home and hired a teacher. Soon three other families with special needs children knocked on his door. In November of 2016, Ray of Hope Academy was officially recognized and then authorized by the government. Ray of Hope Academy’s mission is to take students from all backgrounds with various learning abilities, identify and develop their potential, educate, and help them to become responsible citizens and productive members of society. Currently, ROHA has about 90 students, 25 of whom are on the spectrum, and a staff of 23. The reason why ROHA stands out from other schools in Cameroon is because it is an all inclusive school. This means that both children on and off the spectrum are welcome to learn at Ray of Hope Academy. The school has strictly only special needs class rooms, but it also has classrooms where special needs children are integrated into the typical classroom setting. In this way, special needs children can learn from “typical” children and practice social interactions. In the same way, the integration method allows for “typical” children to gain a heart of compassion and understanding for those who are different from them. Another reason why ROHA is set apart from other schools in Cameroon is the fact that no child is turned away because of their financial situation. This being said, most of the students who attend Ray of Hope Academy are on partial or full scholarship as their families can not even contribute $5 a month! Being a non-profit ministry, having a high teacher to student ratio due to the school’s particular needs, and many students on scholarship, ROHA is in a financial deficit of $60,000 a year! The founder has dedicated his life and sacrificed so much to keep the school functioning. He spends months away from his children trying to raise funds. From churches, embassies, government officials, grants, christian organizations, and even his own savings and retirement, Ernest no longer has anything left to give as he approaches the end of his life. For ROHA to become self-sustaining, it needs 250 paying students at $90 a month. However, the current facilities are bursting at the seams! In order to solve this issue, the school began to build classrooms adjacent to the current building. Unfortunately, each level ROHA builds, the landlord continues to raise the rents. This situation has driven the school to the need to buy land. The difficulty here is that land within Douala is very expensive, which is why the school has not yet found a permanent location. ROHA has looked at buying land outside of the city, but it would lose its target audience because the population outside the city is low. Thankfully, God has provided an opportunity! One of Ray of Hope Academy’s student’s parents approached Ernest with some land that he was putting up for sale near the school. Not only is he willing to sell to the school, he also offered to lower the price to $300,000 if the school can raise the money by the end of the year! As children of God, He calls us to give our lives as a living sacrifice in three different ways. For some God calls us to go, others to give, and to all, He calls us to pray. If you feel led to come and see what God is doing at Ray of Hope Academy personally, please reach out to us via the breadforlife.org website or Facebook page. If you feel called to give, we have a few options for that! As a fundraiser, we are looking for 500 people to partner with us to give $25 a week for 6 months (24 weeks) or a one time donation of $600! Or maybe you feel called to give more or less! Every bit is just as important as the other and we definitely couldn’t do it without you! Ultimately, we ask that you join us through prayer! That as the school continues to grow, people’s lives would be touched by hope in the midst of the challenges they face every day. We pray that through Ray of Hope Academy, families' lives would be altered forever in the knowledge that ultimate hope is in Christ alone. We trust in His timing and we know that all things work together for good no matter the outcome. To God be all glory, honor, and praise!
